The decade of the 2010s saw the rise of social media and the proliferation of digital tools that allow people to alter photos and videos. When you put those two forces together, you get a lot of fake images circulating. And these were the ones that helped define the past 10 years.
Some of it is plain propaganda and some of it is individuals seeking sensationalism. But what made it take off was so many people on social media taking them at face value and resharing them, and in some cases even media outlets. Faking photos though is nothing new as we can see from one old political example from 1912. Good to see a more recent example calculated to try to influence a political election did result in the perpetrator being jailed (not for the actual photo circulated though).
