Chrome Remote Desktop is a great, free way to remotely access a computer

Before using Chrome Remote Desktop, the machine you'd like to access needs to be running the Chrome browser and the Chrome Remote Desktop host (Chromebooks and Chromeboxes already have this built into Chrome OS).

How to Remap Active Edge/Squeeze on the Google Pixel 2

How to Remap Active Edge/Squeeze on the Google Pixel 2

By default, Active Edge only allows you to squeeze your phone to launch Google Assistant or silence incoming calls. Google hardcoded SystemUI to only allow squeeze to work when the current assistant app is set to Google Assistant. That means that developers would have to use a combination of an Accessibility Service and reading system logs in order to detect when the user squeezes their phone so they can hide Google Assistant and instead perform a user-defined action. That’s exactly what the latest update to Button Mapper by XDA Recognized Developer flar2 does.

In any case, the latest update to version 0.53 brings the ability to remap the squeeze function on the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. This particular feature will be available for free, though keep in mind that some of the other features in the app require a paid license.

No Google Pixel 2 for South Africa - So We May As Well Proceed With Importing

No Google Pixel 2 for South Africa - So We May As Well Proceed With Importing

Quite amazing, but at least it confirms for those who really want this phone, you may as well make your arrangements to import it so long. If a self-import is too intimidating (delivery to US addresses, reshipping to SA, and local duties and VAT) then you can keep an eye on sites such as https://www.wantitall.co.za/pixel%202/All/p1 or https://www.ubuy.za.com/search/?cat=&cat_name=&storetype=US-store&q=pixel+2. Just read the small print carefully as some sites include everything in the cost, and others just convert the US price and still add the extra costs.

This is how the Google Pixel 2’s Now Playing Feature Works

Date Published: Sun, 22 Oct 2017 18:48:01 +0200

This is how the Google Pixel 2’s Now Playing Feature Works

The offline song recognition database contains a list of songs in the 10s of thousands. The Now Playing feature is only activated when it hears music. If the Pixel 2 detects music being played (using a combination of software, hardware, and machine learning), it will then look up the audio fingerprint in the database residing on the phone then show you the song name or artist. This database is updated with music each week and is based on the most popular songs from the Google Play Music catalogue. It is also localized according to market, thus, the database is not personalized to the user’s Google Play Music account.

Great South African innovations used around the world

South Africans have brought the world many firsts, from quiet cellular antenna technology to Pratley Putty. It is also a country which has given the world great innovators and inventors, like Mark Shuttleworth and Elon Musk.

But these are "older" innovations as South Africans continue to innovate today - see http://bit.ly/2gYnpBm
