In a major blow to Microsoft, the Chinese government will be replacing all PCs that run Windows by 2022, and could instead use a Chinese-created Linux distro, such as Kylin Linux. Chinese government services have been ordered to replace 30% of Windows PCs by the end of 2020, a further 50% in 2021 and the final 20% by the end of 2022.
It was something the other BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) were all considering, as they felt there was a monopoly by Microsoft and their license costs (as well as developers) were usually leaving their countries. The theory being to create a local Linux distro for use in their own countries which still maintains the broad international compatibility with all Linux applications. In this way you foster a local tax paying ecosystem, maintain compatibility, and retain your costs onshore.
It’s certainly 100% possible (all existing 200+ Linux distros are created this way) and also practical (as we’ve seen from numerous businesses and municipalities around the world).
