How Slack ruined work – It was heralded as the product that would kill internal email chains but it is yet another inbox to check that constantly vies for attention

If you have a suspicious feeling that Slack (or MS Teams) is slowly taking over your time at work, you are not alone.

More businesses than ever have turned to the workplace instant messaging platform to combine chat and emails and slay never-ending internal email chains in the process. The appeal is clear – as of September, there were five billion ‘actions’ on the platform every week, one billion of which are on smartphones.

Slack is more like an instant messenger so can be more invasive than an e-mail inbox that you check once an hour or so. If you have not managed to eradicate the e-mail inbox altogether (which is unlikely) then you have multiple "inboxes" to check… Add to that Whatsapp groups and open-plan offices, and today’s non-remote workers have a lot of distractions from the real work.
