Now this is an interesting page!!! Here are some of my really favourite pieces of software


  • Free Download Manager – feature packed free downloader including file splitting acceleration, resume broken downloads, mirror search, site explorer etc. Integrates with MS Internet Explorer, Opera, Firefox and Mozilla. I use it and recommend it.
  • Fresh Download – a very good and completely free fast file download program, with crash recovery. It will integrate into your browser.
  • Hiren’s CD – all in one bootable CD packed full of powerful freeware utilities.
  • Check&Get – monitors browser bookmarks for updates and changes and then notifies you. Powerful features and works with Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera. Great for monitoring competitors websites or those sites you really need to know about when they are updated
  • Webmon – Freeware webpage bookmark monitor. Not as slick as Check&Get but works with Explorer and Netscape.
  • Teamviewersolution for easy and friendly desktop sharing. You can remote control a partner’s desktop to give online assistance, or you can show your screen to a customer – all without worrying about firewalls, IP addresses and NAT. Free for non-commercial use and will run on Windows, Linux, Mac, and iPhone.
  • ExplorerXP – very fast, small, compact and innovative FREEWARE (for non – commercial use) file manager for Windows 2000/XP. Unlike the regular Windows Explorer, it displays the total size of each folder and allows you to browse multiple folders from a tabbed interface.
  • Ping Plotter – graphically plots and records network connectivity stats using trace route (through all the servers to connect to destination site)
  • Bandwidth SpeedtestSpeedtest.net is a free broadband speed test with servers located all over the world. Compare your results with others and easily share them.
  • Spinrite – probably the oldest and best hard drive checker – now checks XP NTFS and Linux partitions
  • Speedfan – freeware program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips
  • DIRMS and Buzzsaw – free defragmentation software, featuring on the fly defragging. The DIRMS site appears to be dead now.
  • Ashampoo Magic Defrag – defrags in the background
  • Registry Mechanic – safely clean, repair and optimize the Windows registry with a few simple mouse clicks
  • SmartFTP – Free for personal use FTP file transfers
  • You Send It – free transfer of large files
  • MiHD.net – more transfers of large files online
  • Most Popular Freeware for Windows – a really good selection of some of the best
  • 2BrightSparks SyncBack – freeware version backup software. Backs up across networks and to FTP servers, and will also backup open or locked files (registered version required for backing up open files)
  • UpdateStarfree world-class service by keeping a PC’s software up-to-date, increasing a user’s security and productivity
  • VirtualBox – family of powerful x86 virtualization products for enterprise as well as home use.
  • Death Switch –  service that with periodically check if you are alive by mailing you for confirmation. If you don’t respond after a while, it assumes you are dead or disabled, and sends a pre-prepared message to people that you have specified.
  • PrimoPDF – Convert to PDF from any application by simply ‘printing’ to the PrimoPDF® printer (supports Vista). Can also try PDFill.
  • Picasa (Windows and Linux) – free digital camera picture viewer from Google. Assists with viewing, organising, basic fixes, and compressing and e-mailing to friends
  • OpenOffice – completely free office suite similar to Microsoft Office. An improved fork of this project is now LibreOffice.
  • FreeMindpremier free mind-mapping software written in Java. As with other mind mapping software packages, FreeMind allows the user to edit a hierarchical set of ideas around a central concept. The non-linear approach assists in brainstorming new outlines and projects as ideas are added around the mind map. It runs on Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.
  • GliffyDiagramming in your web browser without downloading additional software (Visio equivalent). Also another web based app called Diagramly.
  • GIMP – GNU license completely free image manipulation software similar to Jasc Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop. See online tutotials for GIMP.
  • GIMPShop – free Open Source image editor that is similar to the popular Adobe Photoshop. Specifically GIMPShop is a version of the GIMP that has been edited to be more user-friendly for Photoshop users. See also Wikipedia for more info.
  • Paint.Net – image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools. Requires Windows XP SP2.
  • Irfanview – another freeware graphics viewer program with image manipulation
  • Bravenet – great resource for website builders for things like mailing lists, guest books, page counters, etc. I have been using them for years.
  • Firefox Browser – free replacement browser for MS Explorer. Very quick and very customizable. More compatible than Opera and some other browsers, at reading “difficult” pages. My favourite extensions are:
    • Google search toolbar – Google search bar. Click here for a version that works with Firefox 3.
    • GMail Manager – logs into multiple GMail accounts and pops up tool tips when new mail arrives
    • Better Gmail 2Adds a menu of optional extra features to the new version of Gmail
    • Remember The Milk for GMail –  allows you to manage your tasksGmail (complete, postpone, and edit tasks), in add new tasksGoogle Calendar events), automatically add tasks for (and connect them with your emails, contacts, and starred messages or specific labels
    • Better GCal – Adds a menu of options you can enable within Google Calendar
    • GButts –  Display all of your Google Services as buttons just next to your addressbar or anywhere you like it
    • GMarks – GMarks helps you sync & manage your bookmarks with Google Bookmarks, and displays them in a sidebar
    • Firefox Extension Backup Extension (FEBE) – backs up your extensions, themes & cookies
    • Flickrfox – lets you browse your Flickr photo streams in a sidebar (Most Interesting, Contacts, Everyone, Subscribed Groups, etc)
    • No Script – NoScript provides extra protection for your Mozilla/Firefox> or Flock browser: this extension allows JavaScript and Java execution only for trusted domains of your choice
    • Stumble Upon – StumbleUpon is an intelligent browsing tool for sharing and discovering great websites. As you click Stumble!, you’ll get high-quality pages matched to your personal preferences. These pages have been explicitly recommended (rated I like it) by friends and other SU members with similar interests
    • Shareaholic – makes it easy for you to submit the web page you’re on to your favorite sharing or bookmarking service, including: digg, del.icio.us, facebook, friendfeed, google bookmarks, google reader notes, magnolia, mixx, reddit, stumbleupon, tumblr and twitter
    • Delicious Bookmarks – The Official Delicious Add-on seamlessly integrates your browser with del.icio.us, the leading social bookmarking service on the Web
    • Facebook Toolbar –  free extension for Firefox that lets you extend your Facebook experience into your everyday browsing
    • EMail This! –  will send your recipient the link, title, & highlighted text of the page you are viewing using GMail, Google Apps GMail, Yahoo, and Stand-Alone Mail Clients like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, & More
    • Tabbrowser Extensions – advanced control of tabbed views
    • Session Saver – saves your session and restores it next time you start (exact pages even with back history) – really useful!!
    • BlogThis – blogger publisher (built into Flock)
    • AdBlock – more advanced ad blocking
    • Adblock Filterset.G Updater – companion extension to Adblock and should be used in conjunction with it. This extension automatically downloads the latest version of Filterset.G every 4-7 days
    • FlashGot – allows you to link in various third party downloaders
    • ForecastFox – adds weather forecasting for most international cities – you can customize the display
    • ImageZoom – allows zooming of images
    • Print It – adds print preview to context menu, print selected text
    • Add Bookmark Here – adds context menu option
    • Siteadvisor – As you search or browse, SiteAdvisor’s safety button changes color based on their test results to let you know whether you will be exposed to excessive pop-ups and other annoyances, viruses in downloads, etc
    • Interclue – enhances hyperlinks with link previews, extra information and relevant next actions
    • Open IT Online –  open several types of documents directly in Firefox without needing any software to be installed
    • Aardvark – allows you to tidy up page display before printing
    • QuickNote – allows you to make and save quick notes whilst browsing, like Stick Notes
    • SmoothWheel – allows smoother scrolling with middle wheel
    • IE Tab – Embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox
    • GreaseMonkey – Firefox extension (also works on Flock) which lets you to add bits of DHTML (“user scripts”) to any web page to change its behavior. In much the same way that user CSS lets you take control of a web page’s style, user scripts let you easily control any aspect of a web page’s design or interaction.     Portable Firefox – Portable Firefox is the popular Mozilla Firefox web browser packaged with a PortableApps Launcher as a portable app, so you can take your bookmarks, extensions and saved passwords with you.
