Reading

reading

Another passion, when I make the time for it. Its usually the offline reading that suffers….

Offline Reading:

LibraryThing – some of my books that I have. I am still in the process of adding all the books to the catalogue. You may also find this service interesting as it matches your reading tastes with others with similar interests.

GoodReads – I am using this site more and more because of its mobile app ease of use as well as integration with my offline ebook manager Calibre (manages your entire offline library of ebooks with syncing to Kindles, Kobo readers, etc). Click to subscribe to an RSS feed of my updates on GoodReads.

Noseweek – the controversial South African magazine that dares to tell the real stories behind the story

Linux Format Magazine – really great mag on using Linux and focussed on non-technical users

Zinio Digital Magazines and Books – can be read on your computer or even on mobile devices and also includes lots of local South African magazines.

Bookwrym – an online open source and federated alternative to Goodreads for readers to share reviews and recommendations about books they have read. It allows you to host your own instance (or join someone else’s) and for followers across the Fediverse, including Mastodon, to like, reshare etc these postings. See the list of instances you can join.

Online Reading:

Some of the 400+ interesting RSS feeds that I monitor daily are:

Digg – Digg is a technology news website that combines social bookmarking, blogging, RSS, and non-hierarchical editorial control. With Digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allow an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do.

Slashdot –  ‘News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters’ also a technology news site.

Wired News

Lifehacker – Daily weblog on software and personal productivity recommends downloads, websites and shortcuts that help you work smarter and save time

Google’s SA News – custom feeds are also available for most major countries. Or the website.

RSS Readers:

Discover the secret to focussing and filtering your reading of masses of information daily, by using RSS readers.

Free desktop: RSS Owl

Free Online: Feedly and I have now moved to using InoReader, but both are excellent. I have in the last year migrated to my own self-hosted open source RSS reader called FreshRSS. Tiny Tiny RSS is another good self-hosted option.
