Seismic shift at South Africa’s Eskom: New Data Portal Launched and their future is now Renewable Energy

Eskom has come under fire for flouting environmental laws with the pollution from its ageing coal-powered stations. Eskom CEO recognised that Eskom cannot continue to violate environmental laws, which provides them with an opportunity to move to cleaner energy. This change requires certain regulatory approvals, and Eskom is engaging with the government about these changes.

The new portal gives insight into demand, supply, OCGT usage, renewable, outage performance, emissions, etc. It’s a great start as without monitoring you cannot start to manage and be accountable for what is happening. The portal appears to be a public open data initiative and something that all government departments were supposed to put in place, along with APIs to extract data.

So we still have the problems around generation but more visibility and some intent around a renewable energy future.
