Many of the obvious benefits are stated as well as the well known "negative" ones like the loss of the fuel levy but the article also expands on the jobs under threat in not only the transport value chain but also for South Africa the declining demand for catalytic converters and our platinum mining business. I don’t agree about the manufacturing side as there is no reason why SA can’t transition its existing manufacturing to cater for EVs (unless EVs won’t be needing bodies and wheels anymore).
The biggest take away though is there is a global trend that is accelerating and unless SA faces it head on and transitions in time we will be caught unprepared. The world won’t pause and wait for South Africa (or any other country).
