Privacy concerned people are always in the search of an ultimate service that lets you communicate securely while respecting our privacy across multiple platforms.
For privacy-enthusiasts, registering the phone number with Signal or other such applications is a potential risk. But, with Session, you do not need a phone number, simply click on “Create Account” after you install it on your desktop or phone and it will simply generate a random (unique) Session ID. Session utilizes blockchain at its core and you don’t need to know it’s there.
Even though Session isn’t a peer-to-peer technology, it does not have a central server for the network. It takes a decentralized approach to how the messages are transmitted (or routed) – seemingly using the Loki blockchain nodes for this purpose.
All sounds good (including generic blockchain) but I’m always a bit wary when a network or service is tied to some cryptocurrency and has reward incentives for nodes. BCM Messenger was also tied to such a service, and they just sent out a notification to say they were discontinuing the service. Peer-to-peer always seems better to me in that it does not really on anyone keeping a central service going at all. But the bigger challenge many face to adopting this is where are their friends? I have easily around 20 messenger services I’m on and in many I’m the only person there! I’ve given up asking friends to follow me.
