Scuttlebutt is a usable social network, and more applications can be built on it for free, without permission, by anyone.

Scuttlebutt solves multiple problems plaguing the social networking world:
* One company having control over and access to everything people do and say on the network
* AI algorithms sorting your timeline to decide what you should read, taking control away from you
* Ads and the ability for companies to purchase attention, shoving themselves into your personal social timeline
* That people have to have one profile tied to their real self

It operates very differently from a Facebook or Twitter type network. You cannot access any website to read posts. You install your choice of Scuttlebutt client and start connecting to other peers to both send and receive posts. Once you are up and going you can follow profiles or hashtags (although your peer connections determine how much you see – so you can see as little or as much as you want to) and it all resides on your own computer…
