Sad to say South Africa’s car assemblies are still assembling only ICE vehicles. This particular Hyundai is one I would like to have seen in South Africa.
Really exciting times for Ethiopia. Clean and renewable hydropower dominates Ethiopia’s energy generation mix, contributing around 90% of the installed generation capacity. The electricity tariffs are also very favourable, with residential tariffs at around $0.06/kWh. So this is really great news for Ethiopia and Africa. From an economics perspective it may be cheaper (from a tariff’s perspective) to import EVs from Ethiopia than from the EU or elsewhere into South Africa.
Marathon Motor Engineering, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Company and Olympic Champion Haile Gebrselassie, has started assembling the all-electric Hyundai Ionic in Ethiopia.
