Blockchain, the amazing solution for almost nothing – IT hype around blockchain, cloud, AI and 4IR won’t make today’s problems go away magically but it will sell more consulting services

"Blockchain technology is going to change everything: the shipping industry, the financial system, government … in fact, what won’t it change? But enthusiasm for it mainly stems from a lack of knowledge and understanding. The blockchain is a solution in search of a problem."

ICT is like the rest of the world – a big old mess. And that’s something that we – outsiders, laypeople, non-tech geeks – simply refuse to accept. Councillors and managers think that problems – however large and fundamental they are – evaporate instantaneously thanks to technology they’ve heard about in a fancy PowerPoint presentation. How will it work? Who cares! Don’t try to understand it, just reap the benefits!

It really worries me how IT consultants jump onto the next big thing to sell, whilst all the existing problems have not been solved. How do we implement 4IR whilst we abandoned 3IR without connecting all citizens and even implementing proper basic video conferencing. You can take any server farm and implement positive elements of virtualisation and even cloud, through best practices, and at the same time growing your in-house IT skills. What consultants really want to sell is a dependency on a 3rd party… Blockchain theory is actually a good thing but right now transaction speeds are a nightmare, and maybe you’d be better off applying some of the principles on what you already have.
