I’d jump at a chance for a Renault Kwid electric car (cheapest EV in Europe) but here’s the problem South Africa charges 40% plus import duties

Earlier in October, Wheels24’s Charlen Raymond reported that Renault would be launching an electric version of its Kwid, or better known as the Dacia Spring, in global markets.

Renault South Africa in the meantime confirmed that the Kwid Electric will not be coming to our market.

This has been the case too for Volkswagen and others as the heavy import duties for EVs into South Africa just put’s their price beyond affordable for ordinary drivers. Tragically combustion polluters get away with a far cheaper import duty, compared to many other countries which actively offer incentives to purchasers to buy EVs.

‘I would jump at a chance for a car like the Dacia Spring or Kwid electric. VW’s e-Up! would be another very attractive candidate’, writes Wheels24 reader Justin Steyn.
