Many command line shells for Linux (and MacOS) see stuck in the decades past although they are still fully functional. Fish defaults to VGA colour and auto highlights syntax errors, variables, functions, etc and has scripting and auto-suggestions built right in.
You do not have to make it your default shell if you want to try it out as you can invoke it from your existing shell, and later make it default. Just do not uninstall it whilst it is still set to default.
One wonders why it is actually not the standard shell for all Linux distros…
