The linked article gives a bit more detail about Vodacom and MTN’s options (seems other networks don’t offer eSIM activation yet) as well as the costs. Ironically the old "SIM cost" falls away and becomes a "eSIM activation cost" cost now. And there I thought the old SIM card fee would fall away after we no longer used physical SIM cards 
In the future everything will go eSIM, including phones (some already have them in), so we can expect this to roll out to the other networks in 2021.
