Extreme lengths were employed by both Google and Apple to make these tracing apps as anonymous as possible. So much so that each person has to choose to install it, the data is wiped every 14 days, algorithm keys are used for matches so that no-one is identified, and users must manually make a report. At best though some US states have only achieved a 10% install rate which is way below the required 60% to make it of actual use.
For me the biggest irony is that so many (billions of users) gladly install Facebook, Google, Instagram and Twitter apps which create a rich fabric of all their behaviours, locations, likes, purchases, etc, yet they don’t install a Covid-19 tracing app because their concerns are about being tracked. Their phone operators can already track their location t and even read all their text messages in plain text.
I just find this incredibly hypocritical… Yes I know many have in the last few months especially ditched Facebook, Twitter etc and at least in their defence they are being consistent. If you’re a Facebook, Google or Twitter user, just install the tracing app as really you are no worse off at all!
