Cracked open a new bottle of double distilled Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey today
Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey is named after the famed Kilbeggan Distillery, which dates back to 1757 and was revived by John Teeling and the Cooley Distillery in 2007. So although it lays claim to being one of the oldest distilleries in Ireland (Bushmills contesting this) it does at least have the oldest working still in the country (one of its copper pots is an old Tullamore DEW one that is almost two centuries old). The distillery itself was shut down during the Great Depression and was revived in 2007 but the "new" whiskey only hit the market in 2014.
But despite that, it is good value here in South Africa and (for me anyway) leaves a slightly peaty and wood flavour which is a weaker version of Scottish Highland Park single malt. I rarely taste the honey and vanilla notes that others speak of…. It certainly lacks the complexity and depth of the Highland Park single malt. But it is a good drinking whiskey with a bit of water added. I hope to compare it to the Bushmills still though.
