Google launches Plus Codes for Maps – But we already had broadly supported what3words so why did they not support that?

This is a great idea in principle but what3words is already widely supported by emergency rescue, courier companies, etc, so I’m really wondering why Google came up with something different? How do I remember 32C8+9Q about 5 minutes later? The what3words equivalent is ///stocky.wiping.classics.

If Google Maps could support translating to and from GPS coordinates and street addresses, why not expand with what3words and grow the existing ecosystem? It’s like they took an engineering approach and forgot about the humans using it.
