Facebook is one of the world’s largest centralised social networking platforms around, and while it can be a great place for connecting with loved ones, it’s also been faced with a heap of security and privacy issues as of late (as well as anxiety, fake news, etc). If you no longer feel safe having so much data on Facebook and want out for good, here’s a quick step-by-step guide on how to delete your account using an Android device.
I made the move myself sometime back and only maintain a Page for my blog posts there (no active personal profile). If your family and friends only communicate on Facebook (dare I say change your family or friends) they will still be able to reach you but you should not let a platform dictate your relationships otherwise your relationships.
Moving to social networks with less censorship and propaganda (whilst maintaining control to block people and to see what you want to) provides numerous options. A very popular direct replacement for Facebook for many is MeWe but other decentralised (no single site address to block or censor) federated (interconnected nodes) also exist such as Mastodon (Twitter replacement), Peertube (videos), and Diaspora/Friendica/Hubzilla (also profile based similar to Facebook).
I like decentralised federated networks for the freedoms they provide, unique rules that can be established for each, and you could even host your very own node if you are up to it. You can still follow anyone anywhere else in the Fediverse (except for Facebook as that is a walled garden). These networks are like a breath of fresh air and you find new followers and people to follow with similar interests (and sometimes new trolls, but they can be blocked). One thing you may miss though is no adverts forcefully inserted into your feeds or lots of recommendations to do this or that).
