Twitter just announced that it is planning to free up usernames for inactive accounts. While that means that the coveted Twitter handle you’ve been eyeing might finally be yours, if you happen to grab it before anyone else, Twitter’s move comes with an unfortunate side effect: If someone you love is no longer around to use the service, their accounts might disappear, too.
While the Twitter team is allegedly “thinking” about some kind of account memorialization feature, there’s been no announcement that it’s seriously working on a way to preserve Twitter accounts like that.
So archiving appears to be the only option unless you can log in to the account. The post at https://lifehacker.com/how-to-preserve-the-tweets-of-someone-who-has-died-befo-1840065200 suggests one way to do an external archive but its not quite the same as having the Tweets in their original location.
