How SnapScan and Zapper are surviving South Africa’s tap-to-pay onslaught – For now, they are, for one good reason

SnapScan Standard Bank headline

I can’t remember when I last actually pulled out my physical credit card to make any payment. Payments are either online or tap your watch, and you’re done.

It’s true too, that banks have some good loyalty schemes in place, and all your purchases accumulate into one loyalty system (one of mine earned me a free iPhone already).

So whilst you must have Zapper and Snapscan’s apps installed, they do not require the vendor has a tap-to-pay machine (less investment) nor that a card machine must be brought to the table in a busy restaurant. However, for lone merchants, it is now already possible to use your existing phone as a payment acceptance device for some credit cards (but that requires the buyer to have an NFC chip in their phone).

So certainly Zapper and SnapScan are holding on for now, and for restaurants, maybe for a lot longer, but they’re going to have to innovate to stay relevant.
