How will geoblocking and censorship work on the Internet with Starlink satellites in orbit over all countries? Traditional controls fall away…

With a connection to an overhead Starlink satellite you’ll be gaining an IP address from the satellite, much like a VPN service, meaning there is no traditional way of seeing an IP address granted within a country.

So for example a user in Australia would connect and see sites blocked by their government including a full selection of Netflix movies, and a user connecting from China may be surprised at how much there is on the Internet.

I’m not sure yet where the actual upstream link/s will exit but it will be highly tempting for security agencies to monitor and one wonders what legislation would either guarantee freedom from that, or require some tapping facility to be in place like there has been seen before.

It’s going to be interesting times as the paradigm shifts from geographic country access to a more global access. But I’m sure politicians the world around are sharpening their tongues in readiness for some good hearings to debate this.
