Researchers in Ireland start open source programme offices: "rising awareness of the need to return more value to the public from publicly funded research"

The Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software (Lero), headquartered in Limerick, and Trinity College Dublin have both started open source programme offices this month, to increase their involvement with open source.

It is well-known that use of open source drives innovation (through sharing and re-use of ideas), drives down costs (through re-use and no need to pay annual license fees), and is accessible to all. In many cases public funds are used in government departments and public entities for software development, and these outputs really should be open sourced for the public good.
