Signal is an open source application with a keen focus on privacy. It is recommended by privacy advocates like Edward Snowden. It may not have as many features as Telegram or WhatsApp – but if you want to enhance your privacy while having a conversation, this is a solid open-source solution.
You can install it on your smartphone (iOS/Android) and it is also available for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Really good news, unlike Whatsapp, is that Signal will work even if your phone is lost or off.
The age-old problem with people not switching away from the ‘one big service’ is that ‘my friends are not there’. Well you can be the friend that is there so your friends can join you. With today’s phones and push notifications there is no problem with having 5 or 10 messaging services on your phone. If everyone were to wait for the friends we’ll all be stuck with a single centralised messaging service that can go down or be disabled.
