South Africa electric vehicle sales ‘to grow significantly by 2025’
South Africa could have an electric vehicle (EV) car parc of 145000 with annual sales of new EVs of 43000 units within the next six years. Right now sales are around 60 per annum…
Apart from a motor industry in SA that seems to be resisting EVs (VW told me they will "never import the e-Golf 2) the bigger problem is Eskom (the world's only power utility actively encouraging its consumers to use less of its product). Eskom has just not had the spare capacity to support the existing industry, let alone growth in EVs.
But the interesting take away from the article below is this quote: He said EVs were coming “whether we like it or not”. “We (South Africa) source cars from Europe and the East and they are going to build cars and technologies that are required by China, Europe and the US. “Those are huge markets and we will be subject to what is produced on a global scale,” he said.
Ready or not, it's going to happen and momentum is starting to pick up globally.
