"Truecaller makes your mobile environment smarter by allowing you to connect with who you want, when you want. Truecaller enables you to expand your contact list and reach people you want to find; helps you more easily identify who is calling your cell phone; and protects your mobile identity from unwanted spammers"
It is a highly popular and very effective service but in the light of Facebook and similar scandals, and bearing in mind Truecaller does access (and reshare internally users contact lists – that’s how it knows who is who right down to land line extension numbers) phone contact data, I just wonder whether any of that data is reshared to advertisers? I can’t recall any scandal attached to Truecaller in this regard though.
They are an EU company and have stated this publicly on their website which is re-assuring: "Building services for the world means we have a responsibility to keep your data safe. We do not sell our users’ names or phone numbers to third parties because it is against our ethics. So that our users are able to use our app for free, we work with advertising partners such as Google and others listed in our app and provide trusted partners with caller ID services. Period."
