Matrix is an open source project that publishes the Matrix open standard for secure, decentralised, real-time communication, and its Apache licensed reference implementations. The Matrix protocol is an open standard with open source implementations, supporting a vibrant developer ecosystem. Element was founded by the team behind Matrix as a way to bring it to the mainstream.

According to Element, 25 million users were added to the service in the last year. Matrix reckons that these are users fleeing from the clutches of Big Tech. Microsoft said their monthly active user figure was north of 270 million. Still, 60 million users is a ringing endorsement for the Matrix platform and decentralised messaging in general.
