Bosch’s new sensor-packed Spexor: a self-contained security system that can remotely alert your phone in the event of a break-in but it may be proprietary cloud-dependent

Looking like either a compact smart speaker or those automatic room deodorizers you perch on a toilet, the Spexor replaces a lavender-scented mist with microphones, motion sensors, and even a pressure sensor allowing the compact device to accurately determine if a break-in has occurred, while intelligently minimizing false alarms. With a rechargeable battery that Bosch promises will work for several weeks at a time, the Spexor is designed to be used in places where installing a full security system isn’t feasible, too expensive, or just too much of a hassle. Places like a backyard shed full of expensive tools, a motorhome, or even a lesser used space in your home like the attic which a permanent home security system often ignores, but the local raccoons do not.

To detect break-ins, sensors monitor changes in air pressure, acoustics and movement in the monitored area. Thanks to the high-quality sensors and combined signal evaluation, false alarms are minimized. This is because spexor only reacts when it detects several changes in the environment. For example, you want to prevent spexor from sounding an alarm when a passing truck shakes your parked car. spexor will only react if someone actually enters your vehicle and other environmental parameters change, such as air pressure due to a door being opened. spexor covers a radius of 5 m around the device.

They seem to have also taken pains to address privacy concerns by not including listening microphones or cameras BUT it says "data is stored and processed in Bosch’s own server landscape" and that means it is tied to a proprietary cloud service. If they discontinue the service your device could be dead. It has Zigbee functionality but unless it can operate freely with MQTT I’d be hesitant about that cloud dependency.

Security systems designed for homes are permanent solutions with sensors, wiring, and other components that can take days to install. If you need something more temporary, more portable, and much easier to implement, you can buy a dog, or maybe Bosch’s new sensor-packed Spexor: a self-contained security system that can remotely alert your phone in the event of a break-in.
