As I’m watching the US Tech CEO interrogation right now I’m hearing politicians say it is difficult to be on the Internet today without using Google, Facebook and Twitter…. Maybe for politicains yes, but actually the only excuse I hear from most people is "they can’t leave Facebook because their family are there".
Fact is there are plenty of excellent technical alternatives to these services and if your family and friends were using them, it would be easy for you to move!
- Facebook = Hubzilla, Friendica. MeWe, YouMe Social and plenty more
- Google = Apple, Huawei (dare I say for apps), LineageOS, NextCloud (for e-mail, calendar, todo, bookmarking, RSS, file sharing, photos, and much more).
- Twitter = easy one this with Mastodon as the obvious choice but also lots of other micro-blogging that all interconnect so you can pick any one, and talk to everyone.
For the tech CEOs’ the easy answer is just move off US soil and pick another country…
