I used the HobDrive app connected to my ODB2 plug on my Toyota Yaris Hybrid in the peak hour traffic from Cape Town to home today. Bear in mind this car’s hybrid battery only runs a max of about 2km on a full charge, and is not a plug-in hybrid, so the battery charges using the engine and regenerative braking.
The total trip was 15.4km of which 7.95km (52%) was on battery. Total trip time was 54 min and 33 secs of which 37 min and 5 secs (68%) was on battery. HobDrive gives this a hybrid efficiency rating of 35%.
I’ll repeat the drive tomorrow using the Torque Pro app which will show better stats on the actual fuel economy along the route. This type of hybrid is happiest in peak hour city traffic.
