What is VoIP phone?

A VoIP phone is a hardware- or software-based telephone designed to use voice over IP (VoIP) technology to send and receive phone calls over an IP network. The phone converts analog telephony audio into a digital format that can be transmitted over the internet and converts incoming digital phone signals from the internet to standard telephone audio.

You'll hear more and more about VoIP phones as times goes on as the old concept of a fixed line analogue phone tied to a phone number that changes as you move house, and charges you a fortune for an overseas call, etc is all fading away as the Internet and data connectivity is everywhere. With VoIP you can take your home number with you as you travel anywhere in the world.

Here in South Africa I had settled on Fresh Phone a bit over two years back (and bought a Yealink phone to use with it) and am still very happy with them (there are plenty of other providers but at that time their options, costs and quality were best suited to me). You can also port your existing Telkom landline number over to Fresh Phone so that you keep your old number. I did this post about it at the time https://plus.google.com/+DanievanderMerwe/posts/3DapSZvLH4N.
