I know only a few months ago I announced a site update stating I’d be using my own self-hosted Uptime Kuma for site notices and service status. Now don’t get me wrong, Uptime Kuma is an excellent service with way more options than the free version of Uptime Robot gives, but I have to maintain a separate paid-for server to run it.
I am still using Uptime Kuma on my own infrastructure for the docker monitoring and my own services. I really can’t run Uptime Kuma though on any of my existing infrastructure as it won’t be testing the outside experience, and won’t be available itself if that infrastructure is offline. You cannot monitor from what you are monitoring!
So it came down to extra expense and additional updates/maintenance versus just going back to the free Uptime Robot service for the public status page… The only big difference now is, I no longer can show any scheduled maintenance downtime, or give an update on the external site regarding any real-time outages. I’ll have to think about how to still do that from somewhere. Uptime Robot can certainly do that, but at a cost that is way more even than my separate hosting was costing me for Uptime Kuma.
So, there will be a status page now at https://links.gadgeteer.co.za/uptime (but LOL my shortener service could also be offline, so the main link is https://stats.uptimerobot.com/lnNoVWcUlW).
I may well just use a Cloudflare redirector in future for extended planned maintenance, which just gives a status message. Seeing I’m installing a new network cabinet tomorrow 8th May, I may test that out.
