My daughter, buying yet another headset to replace another broken one, made me rethink headsets again. I’d always got very sore ears after wearing them for any period of time. So after some research online (listening to countless reviews about the ‘best gaming headsets’) I realised it was mostly due to the cup sizes being way too small, so my ears were being pressed against me head.
Realising that anything like this lasts me many many years, I was not going to just skimp on getting something cheap, and then later regretting it, and of course the Sennheiser HD900S is just way over my budget. So I narrowed it down to the Corsair Virtuoso’s, but all reviews were mentioning comfort being a negative. Then another chunk of money upwards, it was being said that the newer XT model had seemed to largely solve that issue (and you could swap out the ear pads for 3rd party one’s). I’ve actually already ordered deeper and wider ear cups now, but I must say it does not seem necessary after all as these XT’s are really comfy, even when wearing glasses.
So my key deciding factors in the end were:
- Connectivity: 2.4 GHz wireless dongle, Bluetooth 5 (15 hours on battery), 3.5 mm jack, and USB-C connectivity
- XT model solved comfort issues
- High-Fidelity 20 Hz to 40 kHz response
- Detachable Broadcast-grade quality microphone (acknowledged by many to be the best in gaming headsets)
- Dolby Atmos and Surround sound
- Solidly built lightweight-aluminium construction
I don’t generally listen to music much, but a headset is great for checking sound quality for your video recordings, as well as playing games or videos late at night without waking everyone up. The only ‘downside’ is I can’t hear my wife shouting from the lounge any more
