Vodacom blocks South African Police spying services over R3 million bill

“It is important to note that this does not impact instances where Vodacom is served with a Section 205 Subpoena from the court,” said Vodacom.

“Naturally, Vodacom remains committed to acting accordingly and will abide by applicable South African laws, including the implementation of directives issued by a designated judge in accordance with RICA requirements.” Under RICA, mobile networks are obliged to offer legal intercept capabilities to law enforcement agencies so long as a designated judge signs it off.

Quite interesting as we are all aware of the RICA interceptions (also for ISPs), but this also appears to be at another level requiring a paid customer account, but there are also hardware devices that required RICA “exemption” certificates. As usual, though, bureaucracy is getting in its own way and tripping itself up.
